It is now easier for new employees to apply for an ATO Tax File Number, using a three-step process:
1. Complete an online application at www.ato.gov.au/TFNapply
2. Print out the summary.
3. Take the summary and the required original proof-of-identity documents to a participating Australia Post retail outlet.
A new Tax File Number should be posted to the applicant within 28 days.
Employers rember: If an employee does not quote a Tax File Number, you must withold tax at the highest marginal rate until they do.
